A creative workspace should be dynamic, evolving to meet the demands of different projects. Whether it’s cover design, illustration, book coaching, or working on a new writing project, having a flexible setup is essential. I also love to keep things fresh by rearranging my space regularly, a habit that helps fuel my inspiration and maintain momentum. A versatile environment like this encourages creativity across the board, no matter the task at hand.
Now, on to my desk setup!
The Chair: Comfort Meets Style
One of the newest additions to my desk is this chair I got from HomeSense. It’s a stylish yet compact chair with a classic tweed fabric that fits perfectly in my cozy workspace. I needed something smaller than my previous “throne” of a chair, and this one’s industrial wood finish and comfy feel have been a game-changer.
The Tech: Monitors and Tools
Mac Setup: I’ve had my 27-inch iMac for about four years now, and it’s still going strong! It’s perfect for all my cover design projects.
Drawing Tablet: For my illustrations, I use the Huion Canvas 24-inch 4K drawing tablet. It’s mounted on a rotating arm so I can easily pull it out when needed.
Keyboard and Accessories: I’m obsessed with the cloud wrist guard for comfort while typing and my trusty Mac keyboard. I also keep my Freewrite nearby, which I use for distraction-free writing.
The Knickknacks: Personal Touches
I’ve got a ton of little items around my desk that I adore. From cute sticky notes gifted by fellow author Sedona Ash to a bowl of crystals I hold when I need a boost while writing, it’s all about balance between practicality and creativity. Oh, and let’s not forget my lip balm, drawing pens, and my Apple Pencil adapter!
Planning and Organization
Planner Love: My planner—the Erin Condren Life Planner—is always nearby. It’s open to the current week, keeping me on track with goals and tasks. I’m constantly setting new goals and organizing my projects, so having everything within reach is a must.
Pens & Supplies: I recently added artist drawers to organize my pens, pencils, and other supplies. These drawers keep my workspace tidy, yet everything is easily accessible.
Displays: Books and Artwork
I have a display shelf that showcases my books, including the Orchard Hollow series. I’m particularly excited because the last book in the series, Double On Murder, is about to release soon! Funko Pops of characters like Harry Houdini and Billy from Shadowhurst also bring a bit of whimsy to the desk.
The Surroundings: Art and Fun Stuff
The artwork on the walls, including a map of Shadowhurst that I give away in my Facebook group, serves as both decoration and inspiration. My daughter’s little Calico Critters are also nestled into my workspace, adding that personal touch.
Mobile Station: Tools on the Go
I have a cart with all my essential writing tools, like my plotting journal, planner, and some of my favorite reference books. I also use it to keep track of receipts and jot down ideas as they come to me.
Wrap up
That’s it for my updated desk tour! In the end, a workspace that adapts to your creative flow is key to staying inspired and productive. By designing a space that evolves with your projects, you create an environment that not only supports your work but also keeps the creative energy alive. Whether you're rearranging for a fresh perspective or switching between projects, a flexible setup can be the catalyst for bringing your ideas to life.
